８月１３日の千葉豪雨のニュース、驚きました。千葉は大学時代から結婚、出産の時期を過ごした思い出の土地です。私が住んでいたのは２５年も前ですが、家が倒壊するような大雨や道路の冠水なんて経験したことがありませんでした。やはり気候変動のせいで雨の降り方がおかしくなっているんでしょうか。
以前のブログでも書きましたが、ここミシシッピでも、６月には熱低気圧の影響で雨で、道路の冠水、停電、家が倒壊した地域がありました。幸い家は被害がありませんでしたが、２００５年のハリケーンカトリーナの時に前の家は全壊したと聞いているので、不安は常にあります。
今の家は前の家があったところよりやや小高いところに立て直したので安全になってると夫はいいますが、それでもこのあたりは災害警戒区域です。そのため保険料は恐ろしく高く、払うこともできませんでした。
８月に入ってからは洪水の心配から一転して、今度は雨が一滴も降らない状態が何日も続いてます。
毎日強い陽ざしで野菜も花も水やりを滞ると瞬く間にくったりです。
ここの天気って、オリン（夫の名前）の性格みたいに極端だよね、と冗談を言っていますが、本当に極端で困ってます。
満タンだった雨水タンクも、もうすぐ空になりそうです。
高校生の時巫女さんのアルバイトをした経験のある私、雨乞いの儀式でもしようかと思うくらいでしたが、気の狂ったアジア人だと思われそうなのでそれはやめました。（実際、そんな能力ありませんし）
さて、この乾いた時期を利用して、夫は灌漑システムを作る作業を続けています。パイプを通すために、せっせとシャベルで掘り続けました。
ハリケーンで倒壊した家のあったところの土台に突き当たってしまい、コンクリートブレーカーを一日レンタルすることになりました。またまた痛い出費です…
しかし、この後、ようやくパイプを通すことができました。
今まで長くて重いホースを引きずって水やりしていたところに、簡易式の蛇口を設置しました。

この写真には入りきれませんでしたが、パイプはさらにこの敷地の外のボイズンベリーのほうにまで伸びています。
これから散水チューブを入れる作業に入る予定です。

The god of weather doesn't save us.
I was shocked by the news about the heavy rains in the Japanese prefecture of Chiba on August 13th. That’s where I spent my college days, got married, and had my first baby. I have a lot of memories there. That was 25 years ago, but I never experienced such hard rains that destroy houses and cause flooding. It is often said that we have more extreme rain events due to climate change.
As I wrote before, here in Mississippi there was recently some flooding that caused power outages and damage to houses due to a tropical strom. Our house fortunately didn’t sustain any damage, but we always have that fear since the old house was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
My husband said that the current house is built a little higher off the ground than before, so it should hopefully be safe. Still, this entire area is a hazard zone. That makes homeowner’s insurance terribly expensive, so we couldn't afford it this year.
Rather than flooding, since late July we haven’t had any rain at all.
The powerful sunshine makes our vegetables and flowers wilted.
I joked with my husband. “Mississippi weather is extreme, just like your personality.”
Our rain barrel was filled with water, but it will be empty soon.
I thought I should perform a prayer to the god of rain, since I had served as a shrine maiden when I was in high school. But people might think I’m a crazy Asian woman, so I didn’t do it. (Of course, I don’t have such spiritual power.)
My husband is taking advantage of the dry weather to continue working on the irrigation system. He dug trenches in the ground to put the pipes in.
He hit some concrete where the old house was, so we ended up renting a concrete breaker for a day.

But finally he was able to install the pipes.
He placed faucets where we used to drag heavy hoses.
The blue lines are the main pipes, and the green dots are the hose faucets. The red borders are the vegetable gardens (this satellite image is old, so they don’t appear on it). He is going to put drip tubing to the gardens from the black dots.
You can’t see it in this picture, but the pipe goes outside of this yard and extends to the boysenberries.
The next step is placing the drip tubing.
