シーン変わって、ロバートとカーソン(左)が書斎で話しをしています。

険しい顔していますが、いつも大体こんな顔してます

Carson: The plain fact Mr Bates, through no fault of his own, is not able to fulfill the extra duties expected of him.
端的に言いますとベイツさん自身に非はありませんが、通常の業務以外でやって欲しいことを果たしてもらえないことです。
・plain fact は明白な事実、疑う余地がないこと。
・extra duty は通常や日常やっていること以外のやるべきこと、業務。
He can't lift, he can't serve at table, he's dropping things all over the place.
今夜のような夜には第三従僕として(給仕に)務めるべきです。
・serve は義務を持って人や組織に対して働くこと。そこから
serve at は給仕すること。
On a night like tonight, he should act like a third footman.物を持ち運べず、給仕もできず、至る所で物を落としています。
As it is, m'lord, we may have to have a maid in the dining room.
このままでは、旦那様、メイドを食堂に出すことになりかねません。
・as it is = in the existing circumstances.から、今のまま・現状況では。
ベイツを気に入っているロバートは擁護します。
Robert: Cheer up, Carson. There are worse things happening in the world.
前向きになってくれないか、カーソン。世の中はもっと酷い状況だぞ。
・cheer upは元気を出せ、がよく訳されますが、他にも不幸や不満な気持ちを減らすこと・逸らすことから、くよくよするな、嫌なことは忘れろ的な時にも使われます。
Carson: Not worsen than a maid serving a duke.
メイドが公爵に給仕する以上のことほど悪いことはありません。
使用人らにはそれぞれの役割があり、たとえばどれだけメイド長のミセス・ヒューズが偉くても給仕することは考えられない時代でした。
Robert: So you're quite determined.
では決心は揺らがないと。
Carson: It's a hard decision, Your Lordship, a very hard decision, but the honour of Downton is at stake.
辛い決断です、旦那様、とても辛いことです、しかしダウントンの名誉がかかっています。
It's a hard decision のような表現をカーソンさんは別でも口にしますが、大体辛そうに見えないです。
Robert: Don't worry, Carson, I know all about hard decisions when it comes to the honour of Downton.
案ずるな、カーソン、ダウントンの名誉に関しての辛い決断はよくわかってる。
シーン変わって荷物置き場。
どうやらウィリアムがトマスにこき使われるのをミセス・ヒューズが気にかけます。
Hughes: William, you mustn't let Thomas take advantage. He's only a footman, same as you.
ウイリアム、トマスに利用されては駄目よ。彼もあなたと同じ従僕にすぎないのよ。
・take advantage は機会を利用するもあれば、搾取するような利用する、にも使われます。
William: Well, that's all right, Mrs Hughes. I like to keep busy. Takes your mind off things.
はい、いいんですよ、ヒューズさん。忙しいのが好きなんです。考え事をしなくないから。
・take one's mind off （無理に何かしたりして）悩んでいることなどを忘れること。
Hughes: What things have you got to take your mind off? If you're feeling homesick, there's no shame in it.
何から頭から離させたいかしら？ホームシックなら、全然恥ずかしいことじゃないわよ。
William: No.
いえ。
Hughes: Means you come from a happy home. There's plenty of people here would envy that.
それって、素敵なお家で育ったってことじゃない。結構妬まれることじゃないかしら。
William: Yes, Mrs Hughes.
そうですね、ヒューズさん。
またシーン飛んで、夕食会前のロバートとベイツ。
Bates: Will that be all, m'lord?
以上でございますか、旦那様。
・Will that be all? 店員など従業員がこれで以上ですかと確認する時に言う表現。
Robert: Yes, …that's not exactly. Have you recovered from your fall this afternoon?
ああ、…実はあって。午後の転倒はもう大丈夫か？
not exactly = no.
Bates: I'm very sorry about that, m'lord. I don't know what happened.
そのことにつきまして本当申し訳ありません、旦那様。なぜあんなことが起きてしまったのか。
Robert: The thing is, Bates, I said I'd give you a trial and I have. If it were only up to me. It's this question of valet's extra duties.
その、ベイツ、前に言った、試用期間を設けると、そしてそれが終わった。私だけで決めれたらよかったんだが、従者の通常業務以外のことが引っかかっている。
Bates: You mean waiting a table when there's a large party.
それは大きな会での給仕のことでしょうか。
Robert: That and carrying things... you do see that Carson can't be expected to compromise the efficiency of his staff.
それもだし、荷物運びもだ…カーソンは雇われている者の能力が下回ることが許せないことは君も重々承知しているだろう。
Bates: I do, m'lord, of course I do. Might I make a suggestion? That when an extra footman is required, the cost would come out of my wages.
はい、旦那様、当然のことと承知しております。提案をさせていただいてもよろしいでしょうか？従僕が足りない時は私の給金からその費用を賄うというのは。
・make a suggestion 提案をすること。
Robert: Absolutely not, I couldn't possibly allow that.
あり得ない、到底受け入れがたいことだ。
Bates: Because I'm really eager to stay, m'lord. Very eager, indeed.
私はどうしてもここに居たいからです、旦那様、本当に心から。
Robert: I know you are. I was eager that this should work.
それはわかっている。上手くいけれたらよかったが。
Bates: You see... it is unlikely that I should find another position.
その…別の同じ条件を見つけれそうにないのです。
Robert: But surely in a smaller house where less is expected of you...
だがもう少し小さい屋敷なら求められることも少ないはずだ。
Bates: It's not unlikely.
そんなことはないでしょう。
Robert: I mean to help until you find something.
なにか見つけるまで援助するつもりだ。
Bates: I couldn't take your money, m'lord. I can take wages for a job done, that's all.... Very good, m'lord, I'll go at once.
金銭は受け取れるはずがないです、旦那様。こなした仕事に対しての給金は受け取れますが、それだけです…かしこまりました、旦那様、直ぐに出ていきます。
以下長台詞も分けます。
Robert: There's no need to rush into the night.
夜に急いで出ていく必要はない。
Take the London train tomorrow, it leaves at nine.
明日のロンドン行き9時発に乗りなさい。
You'll have a month's wages, too.... That I insist on.
ひと月分の給金も受け取ってくれ…これは譲れない。
・I insist は断られた時や断られそうな時、何かを相手にする時にも使います。
It's a bloody business, Bates, but I can't see any way around it.
酷いことだが、ベイツ、他のやり方は考えられない。
・bloody はイギリス英語で何かを強調する時に使います。
・business はここでは関わること、その状況。その際、意見や決断をすることです。
当主として、仕えてくれる使用人らのためには自分の意思を押し通さず判断を下しています。
・way around 対応したり、問題をさけること。
Bates: I quite understand, m'lord.
