Sex is an anarchic current running through society. Love? That too. If the two coincide, so much the better — but they rarely do, with social and psychological consequences ranging from unsettling to tragic. Autocrats distrust love. They fear it. Sometimes they hate it. It’s ungovernable. Or is it? Maybe not, if contained. Japan’s rulers in times past made a crime — sometimes a capital one — of love outside the container.

Only two other class of persons were treated with anything like the merciless ferocity meted out to lovers: subversives and Christians. The former could include anyone seen stirring, or heard murmuring, against the status quo. The latter, most pitiable indeed, were the intrepid souls — peasants mainly; men, women and children — who worshiped in secret the banned “God of heaven” in defiance of the most lurid tortures in the regime’s arsenal: boiling, flaying and burying alive, for example.
