Nuke tech tested on curbing rhino poaching
MOKOPANE, South Africa (AP) - Researchers in South Africa have injected radioactive material into the horns of 20 rhinos as part of a research project aimed atreducing poaching.
The idea is that radiation detectors already in place at national borders would detect the horns and help authorities arrest poachers and traffickers.
The research, which included the participation of veterinarians and nuclear experts, begins with the animal being tranquilized before a hole is drilled into its horn and the nuclear material carefully inserted.
While the idea has some support, researchers had to jump many ethical hurdles posed by critics of their methodology. They said the dosage of the radioactivity is very low and no effects have been found.
今回取り上げるのは dosage /dóusidʒ/です。誌面には「被爆量」と書かれていました。
手持ちの ACE CROWN で引いてみると「一回分の服用(投薬)量」とありました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』でも調べてみると「1.服用量2.(X線などの)放射量、適用量」とありました。
LDOCEでは‘the amount of a medicine or drug that you should take at one time, especially regularly’と定義されていました。
Etymonlineで語源をみてみると「投薬行為または投薬の実践として、特にその量に関して、化学において1867年、医学において1874年に使用されるようになりました。フランス語の dosage（1812）のモデルに基づいて、dose と -age を組み合わせたものと考えられています。」と記述がありました。
このアイデアは倫理的に問題があるという批判があるようですが放射線の被爆量は非常に低く、影響は見つかってないようです。( Capricorn )
