語源を etymonline で調べると、aspirare「目指す、達成しようとする」、文字通り「息を吹きかける、吹く」という動詞の過去分詞の語幹から来ていることがわかります。さらにそこから「より高い目標に対する固い憧れ、何か上位のものに対する熱心な願望という意味は約1600年から記録されています。」
