The suburban Tokyo city of Hachioji registered a temperature of 35.4 C at noon the same day.
Other areas across the country that saw the mercury rise above 35 C -- designated as an "extremely hot day" in Japan -- included the cities of Shingu in western Japan's Wakayama Prefecture and Shizuoka's Suruga Ward in central Japan.
