今日取り上げるのは，文中にあるransomwareという英単語です。ransomは「人質」を指しますが，それと何か関連のある語なのでしょうか。パッと意味を掴めなかったので，以下でみていきたいと思います。
手持ちの辞書には記載されていなかったので，「英辞郎 on the WEB」の力を借りると，「ランサムウェア，押し売りウイルス(パソコン内のデータを勝手に暗号化し，元のデータを削除し，復元ソフトを買わせようとするウイルス)」との説明がありました。
どうやらIT用語のようですね。英英辞書での定義も確認すると，

と記載されていました。ネット上の「身代代金型ウイルス」とも言えるでしょうか。
以上から，ransomwareはコンピュータウイルスの１つで，「感染したコンピューターを復旧することを理由に，不当な料金請求をする」ことを表す単語であることが分かりました。
ちなみに，過去ログでも紹介されていましたが，語の成り立ちとしては，ransom「人質」+ ware「ware(同一種類の品)→waru(保護)→waro(注意)→waraz(用心深い)→wer-(注意する)が語源であるそうです(参照:「語源英和辞典」)。(bro-taro-world)
