『イージー・ライダー』などで知られている俳優ピーター・フォンダさんが、肺がんによる呼吸不全のため死去しました。

LOS ANGELES — Peter Fonda, the son of a Hollywood legend, became a movie star in his own right after both writing and starring in the counter-culture classic “Easy Rider.” Fonda died Friday at his home of complications from lung cancer. He was 79.

見出しにある rides off into the sunset /sˈʌnsèt/ に注目しました。「日没、日の入り」が思い浮かびますが、ここでは違った意味として用いられています。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版には、ride off into the sunset で「夕日の中に馬に乗って [まっすぐ進んで、船に乗って] 消えていく」とありました。さらに第２義には「終局の、末期の；[法] 満了の、満期の」とあります。さらに映画の「ハッピーエンド」という意味もあります。また動詞にはwlak, go, drive, sailなども用いられます。
Cambridge English Dictionary は “used to describe a part of a law or contract that states when it will end, or the conditions under which it will end” と定義しています。また Collins English Dictionary には “the final stage or closing period, as of a person’s life” とありました。
この見出しは ride off into the sunset は「夕日」ではなく、「（名優が）ハーレーに乗って人生の幕を終える」という意味なのでしょう。
ここで一点、先生に教わったことがあります。映画『イージー・ライダー』のエンディングでは親友のBillyがshotgunで殺され，主人公の彼も打った相手に向かって突撃し，同じように撃たれてしまうところで亡くなってしまいます。つまり彼の出世作となった作品は決してride off into the sunsetではなかったのですが，それこそが監督，共演のデニスホッパーのねらいだったのかもしれないということです。
以上から、見出しのrides into the sunset は「夕日に向かって消えていく姿」と「彼の死」を掛け合わせた表現となります。 (amphibian)
