今回取り上げるのは asylum /əsάɪləm/ です。記事にあった挿画から難民のことについての記事であることが分かっていたので、難民のことを指しているのではないかと推測しました。以下で定義を確認していきます。
LDOCEによると “protection given to someone by a government because they have escaped from fighting or political trouble in their own country” と定義されていました。
また、語源も同書 に “asylum (1400-1500) Latin Greek asylon, from asylos ‘not able to be seized’” との記載がありました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版）では、「(難民・亡命者などの)保護、亡命」とあります。
今回の法律の変更は、アメリカなどで難民申請を拒否された人々が、カナダ国内に流入してきていることに対して行おうとしているものです。(KOH)
