『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版）には名詞で「（世間の強い）抗議」という意味があり、語源は、cry out （強く抗議する）からきたものであると記載がありました。つまり、outcryは使いやすさを考慮して句動詞が名詞化された語であると言えます。
