取り上げるのは、prerequisite /prìːrékwəzit/ です。接頭辞にpre-が付いているので「前もって」という意味が含まれていることは分かりました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では、「〔…の〕必須[前提]条件(precondition)〔to, for, of〕,受講条件」と定義されていました。
またLDOCEでは、“formal something that is necessary before something else can happen or be done prerequisite for/of/to”と定義されていました。
さらに、Weblio辞書では、「先修科目。特定の科目をとるために、あらかじめ履修しておかなければならない科目。科目番号が300番以上のものには、prerequisiteがあることが多くある。」と定義されていました。
以上のことから、prerequisiteは「前提条件」という意味なのだと分かりました。また、海外の大学で履修登録する際に見られる単語であることも分かりました。(star)
