今回取り上げるのは、itchy /ítʃi/です。花粉症に関する記事でしたので、「かゆい｣という意味があるのではないかと推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』 (第5版) には、
1) ｢かゆい｣、2) ｢〈衣類などが〉ちくちくする｣、3) ｢欲しくて〔したくて〕むずむずする｣、と載っていました。
また、LDOCE には “if part of your body is itchy, it feels slightly unpleasant and you want to rub it with your nails”
“if clothes are itchy, they make your skin feel slightly unpleasant, so that you want to rub your skin with your nails”
“wanting to go somewhere new or do something different”と説明されていました。
Weblioには｢皮癬にかかった、いらいらする｣、と載っていました。
イディオムとして、“have an itching palm” ｢欲が深い、わいろを欲しがる｣
とありました。このイディオムは、手のひらがむずがゆいのはお金が欲しい時という昔の信仰から由来したそうです。｢かゆい、むずむず、いらいら｣、という意味から、花粉症の辛さが伝わってきました。(Lee)
