20日午前9時18分頃、山口県沖の日本海で、訓練のため飛行していた航空自衛隊のF2戦闘機1機の機影がレーダーから消えました。戦闘機は墜落したとみられます。

今回気になった語は squadron /skwάdrən/ です。 the fighter was part of a squadron of three jets とあることから、機に関する意味になると予測します。
『 ジーニアス英和辞典』 (第5版) には、
- 「〘米空軍〙飛行大隊、〘英空軍〙飛行中隊(→flight)」
- 「〘海軍〙(2隻以上の同種艦艇からなる)小艦隊」 とありました。
LDOCE では、 ”a military force consisting of a group of aircraft or ships” と定義されていました。
また、squadron の語源を Oxford Living Dictionaries (on-line) で調べたところ、 ”Mid 16th century (originally denoting a group of soldiers in square formation): from Italian squadrone, from squadra ‘square’.” と説明されており、イタリア語に由来することがわかりました。
4ヶ月前にも、2機が訓練飛行中に接触し、機体の一部が破損する事故が起きています。今回の事故の墜落原因が未だ不明なのが、気になります。何より、パイロットが無事だったのが安心です。(SKMK)
