Why does a conversation about ancestral belonging so often end with Palestinians being asked to accept less?

Benjamin Netanyahu’s father was born in Warsaw. His paternal grandfather was born in Kreva, then within the Russian Empire and now in Belarus.

Those birthplaces tell part of a family’s migration story. They cannot, by themselves, disprove Jewish ancestry or historical connections to the region.

But acknowledging Jewish history should also mean making room for Palestinian history, rather than treating it as an obstacle.

Palestinians have families, communities, memories, and deep connections to the places they call home. Their rights do not become less important because another people also has historical ties to the land.

No politician’s account of ancestry should place a government beyond scrutiny over how it treats people today.

Ask about equal rights. Ask about freedom, safety, displacement, and the possibility of a future without domination.

The question that matters is how everyone’s belonging will be respected in practice.

A claim to an ancestral homeland cannot reasonably require another people to surrender their own.
