Raven-Symoné reignited the debate surrounding African American identity by explaining that she considers herself American first and foremost. She stated that she does not define herself as "African American," while acknowledging her Black identity. She notably questioned why white Americans are generally not referred to as "European Americans," whereas Black people are often described as "African Americans." She later clarified her remarks, emphasizing that she was not denying her heritage but simply wished to define her identity on her own terms.
