日本の科学者たちが、歯を修復するのではなく、全く新しい歯を生やす薬の試験を行っています。「TRG035」と呼ばれるこの薬は、歯の成長を抑制するタンパク質「USAG-1」の働きを阻害します。このタンパク質の働きを止めれば、体内で休眠状態にある「第3の歯」の芽が目覚める可能性があります。現在、先天的に歯が欠損している子供24人を対象とした臨床試験が計画されており、倫理委員会の承認待ちとなっています。
多くの動物は生涯にわたって歯が生え変わりますが、人間はそうではありません。研究者たちは、その理由の一つがUSAG-1にあることを突き止めました。この薬は、いわばその「ブレーキ」を外す役割を果たします。もし実用化されれば、入れ歯やインプラントは、ある世代以降、不要なものになるかもしれません。

Japanese scientists are testing a drug that doesn't fix teeth — it grows entirely new ones. The drug, TRG035, blocks a protein called USAG-1 that suppresses tooth growth. Switch it off, and the body's dormant "third set" of tooth buds can awaken. A trial in 24 children with congenital tooth absence is now planned, pending ethical review.
Most animals keep replacing teeth their whole lives. Humans don't — and researchers discovered USAG-1 is one reason why. The drug essentially removes the brake. If it works, dentures and implants could become obsolete for an entire generation.
The disruption angle: global dentistry — implants, bridges, dentures, cosmetic veneers — is a multi-hundred-billion-dollar industry built on the assumption that teeth don't regrow. A $200 pill that grows real teeth upends that entire economic model. History is full of industries that slow-walked disruptive cures; dental incumbents have every incentive to do the same.
For American families, this could mean no more $4,000-per-tooth implants and no more childhood dental gaps. But the drug targets a 2030 release in Japan first — US availability would trail years behind.
