These accumulated bones were awaiting industrial processing to be crushed and turned into fertilizer or bone char.
In the early 19th century, the North American Great Plains were home to between 30 and 60 million bison.
Within a few decades—driven by industrial hunting for the hide trade, the expansion of the railways, and government policies aimed at depriving Indigenous nations of their primary vital resource—the population collapsed dramatically, teetering on the brink of total extinction with fewer than 1,000 individuals remaining by the late 1880s.
