In Sweden, members of the Riksdag—the national parliament—enjoy relatively modest conditions compared to many foreign politicians. As of 2026, their basic monthly allowance stands at approximately 81,400 Swedish kronor, or just over 7,000 euros. They generally do not have a personal company car or a chauffeur, and they must pay for their own meals. However, for work-related travel, they may use public transport and are eligible for reimbursement or direct coverage of expenses as provided by Parliament.
MPs whose homes are located sufficiently far from Stockholm may also be provided with simple official accommodation, intended to allow them to work in the capital without having to shoulder the cost of two full rents. This arrangement reflects a political culture in which perks granted to elected officials are subject to close scrutiny and the use of public funds is regularly reviewed. In Sweden, a parliamentary mandate is thus viewed more as a form of public service than as a status that affords a lavish lifestyle.
