More than 10,000 protesters gathered outside Japan’s National Diet building in Tokyo on the night of March 19, 2026 in one of the country’s largest anti-war demonstrations in recent years, voicing strong opposition to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s push to revise Japan’s pacifist constitution and deploy long-range missiles in alignment with Washington’s strategic posture in the region. The protest was timed to coincide with Takaichi’s summit meeting with US President Donald Trump held the same day, a gathering that demonstrators said represented exactly the kind of uncritical alignment with American foreign policy that they were marching against. Protesters carried signs reading No War and messages opposing Japanese military expansion and what many described as excessive deference to Washington’s geopolitical agenda. The crowd, which gathered peacefully with glow sticks visible throughout the demonstration, chanted slogans including Japan’s future is not in Washington reflecting widespread public anxiety about the country being drawn into the expanding US-Iran conflict. An Asahi Shimbun poll conducted on March 14 and 15 found that 82 percent of Japanese citizens oppose the United States attack on Iran, one of the strongest readings of public anti-war sentiment recorded in Japan in the post-war era. Japan’s pacifist constitution, adopted after World War Two, has long been a source of national identity and the prospect of its revision to allow offensive military capabilities including long-range missile deployment has consistently faced significant public resistance. The protests have been reported by Xinhua, the Christian Science Monitor and multiple Japanese media outlets. Prime Minister Takaichi has not issued a direct public response to the demonstration at the time of reporting.
