Wait, it’s not what you think! Contrary to what you might think at first glance, this video is not in any way compromising but instead shows the rather acrobatic birth of a baby chameleon. While some chameleon species are oviparous, that is to say, they lay eggs, Cape dwarf chameleons are ovoviviparous. The young take shape in eggs inside the mother’s body.
Like in chickens, the embryo is nourished by the egg itself, instead of being connected to its mother by an umbilical cord that ensures the transport of nutrients. But, unlike in chickens, the egg hatches in the mother’s body, and the young are born ready for use, so to speak.
Look, this one is already hunting! In the case of Cape dwarf chameleons, gestation lasts four months on average and the young are generally less than 2cm long at birth. Once they reach adulthood, they can adopt more or less intense colours with varied patterns. Most often, their skin is bright green and their sides are covered with orange and blue stripes.
However, do not think that it is easy to spot them among the South African trees that serve as their refuge. Like many other chameleons, they are kings of camouflage. To protect themselves a little more against their predators, they adopt this astonishing gait giving the impression that they are moving on embers. They actually imitate the movement of the leaves in the trees so that their movements go more easily unnoticed.
If, however, a threat seems a little insistent, be aware that the chameleon does not hesitate to suddenly change color, to inflate its body while hissing, and to bite to complete the portrait! It is therefore better not to bother it in its habitat.
