INDIA: VERY CURIOUS FLYING MACHINES IN THE ANCIENT SACRED BOOK “MAHABHARATA”
In the Vedic literature of ancient India we find descriptions of flying machines that are generally called "the Vimanas". The Vimanas, says the Vedic text, are vessels that fly with the help of "bird wings", and are piloted in a "mysterious" way. These vessels are generally not made by human beings but by the gods. These machines are described primarily in medieval and secular Sanskrit works dealing with architecture, automata, engines used in military sieges, and other mechanical adaptations. These devices are described in ancient works such as the Rig Veda, the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, and the Puranas.
The Vimanas can have a capacity of one man to around thirty men. According to the descriptions, a sort of semi-circular dashboard allows the ship to be maneuvered with "lightning speed".
Here are a few lines taken from numerous ancient texts:
"Once, while King Citaketu was traveling in outer space on a resplendent device given by Lord Vishnu, he saw Lord Siva..."
"The arrows released by Lord Siva appeared as the fiery beams emanating from the globe of the sun and covered the three residential planes, which could then no longer be seen." - Srimad Bhagasvatam, Sixth Canto, Part 3
Sometimes the Vimanas are described as flying cities, which explains the term "residential planes" in the text.
