Burkina Faso: The Sanbrado mine confirms its role as a giant in gold production in Africa
Burkina Faso is consolidating its position as a major gold producing power in Africa, thanks to the impressive performance of the Sanbrado mine. Operated by Australian company West African Resources, this mine recorded record revenues for the country during the first quarter of 2024.
During the first three months of the year, the Sanbrado mine produced 49,509 ounces of gold, selling at an average price of $2,078 per ounce. This solid performance resulted in quarterly revenues of $102.87 million, or more than 62 billion CFA francs.
Compared to the same period in 2023, these revenues saw a significant increase of 13%. This jump is attributed to the upward trend in gold prices on global markets and the increase in volumes sold.
Despite this impressive start, West African Resources forecasts a slight drop in production this year, with an estimate of between 190,000 and 210,000 ounces, compared to 226,823 ounces in 2023.
The Sanbrado mine thus continues to play a crucial role in the Burkinabe economy, contributing significantly to the country's revenues and confirming the significant mining potential of Burkina Faso on the African and world stage.
