RICE

This summer, I went to Australia for a month to study English and taught Japanese.

I stayed with a woman who were a vegetarian, so I could eat some bowl of cooked rice.

But it's not same as Japanese rice...It's not sticky.


After I came back Japan, firstly, I ate a bowl of rice!!

It's so delicious!!!

I recognized I'm Japanese!!!

What the word "Chanko" means??

chanko-nabe

a hearty, heavy stew made from various ingredients and popular with sumo wrestlers

tori-niku -- with chicken

sakana -- with fish

buta-niku -- with pork

ebi -- with shrimp

gyu-niku -- with beef


I found this HP about Japanese foods. But I noticed there is one mistake.

Many Japanese also misunderstand the meaning of “Chanko” so I want to correct this mistake.

The “Chanko” means all foods, which the sumo wrestlers eat. Therefore, if the wrestler eats sushi, it is called “chanko”.

I think it is not serious mistake but if you want to understand Japan more deeply, it is good trivia.

Daigaku-imo

Daigaku-imo is made with sweet potato, starch syrup and sesame. Cut the potato rough and fry it deeply. Then dust the starch syrup and sesame.

“Daigaku” means University. Why “Daigaku” attached the name of food?

There is one reason. From Taisho era to Syowa era, this food was liked in a student’s town.

It is hard to make Daigaku-imo at home because starch syrup is very sticky. So it is trouble to wash some bowls, which was used when making Daigaku-imo.

Sasa-dango is made with rice cake, small beans and bamboo leaf.

Sasa means bamboo and dango means dumpling.

Rice cake is wrapped with bamboo leaf and azuki (boiled small beans) is inside the rice cake.

Yomogi (edible leaf) is kneaded the rice cake. This is a peculiarity of Niigata.

If there was no bamboo leaf, we call it Kusa-mochi. Kusa-mochi is eaten in the Girl’s Festival.
