In February 2020, my camera was focusing on Yuzuru Hanyu, dancing on the ice in Four Continents Championships in Seoul, South Korea. When I’m taking photos, I feel that I’m here on behalf of fans who cannot come here. So, I prepare fully.

Hanyu skate very fast. Therefore, it’s very difficult to take many photos satisfy me with the balance of his movements and expressions or the composition, So, to take good photos, I watch videos of his past performances and make images of the photo-composition. At the same time, although normally photos for newspaper, it has a trend of “with front view of the face and hands’ movements”, however considering the uniqueness of Figure Skating, “better take the whole body included”, so I carefully decide the composition. I usually take about 800 photos during a 4-min FS performance, among them checking whether his fingertips are in the frame, what about his facial expression, or focusing properly, all these I consider carefully, and decide photos to release.

The latest cameras have much improved AF tracking accuracy, so it allows you to focus on the skaters’ quick movements. Even a skater’s face is not in the centre, automatically, the camera focuses on the face, so the degree of freedom in composition has increased, such as creating a space intentionally. Lenses are getting lighter now, so even using a telephoto lens, I take photos singing the camera pretty high speed. In the victory ceremony or gala, the lighting is often darker however, recent cameras can take more of clear photos to be chosen under such situations with the high sensitivity of ISO 8000 or so without noises.

Hanyu won Four Continents Championships held in February 2020 for his first time in this event, and with this win, he won all six major international competitions included Junior and Senior classes. I was also able to take some photos which captured Hanyu’s facial expression matching his performances. In the future too, I would like to keep delivering Hanyu’s fascinations.

Mr. Wakasugi used the photo of Yuzu landed 3A in 4CC, and he also talked about how bautiful and airy Yuzu's 3A landing is in the on-line Yuzuru Hanyu Photo Exhition.

Yeah, really, Sarah believes that Yuzu has wings and can create a different gravity sphere when he jumps!!!

ってかね、若杉さん、「フィギュアスケートの写真」というテーマじゃないよね、「羽生結弦の写真」がテーマ！😁　しかも、これからもフィギュアスケートの魅力じゃなくって、「羽生選手の魅力を」と言い切っているところ、うふふ！最高だわ。

ってか、そうなるよね、結弦君を撮っていたら、フィギュアスケート競技を撮っているというより、

もう、完全に「芸術写真」を撮っているって心理になっちゃうだろうしね～～！！！

Well, but Wakasugi is not talking about "photos of Figure Skating" but focusing on "photos of Yuzuru Hanyu"! And the closing of the aricle is not "delivering Hanyu's fascinations" but not "fascinations of Figure Skating" it's interesting!!! However, can understand too, yeah, once he focused on Yuzu, then he may not feel that he's taking sprots photos but may feel taking "fine-art photos"!!!
