最近は、園芸用のお花、ずいぶん多様化しているよね
nowadays, so many new varieties of gardening flowers
小田原の菊です・・かなり出遅れてしまったけど

「菊」と言うと、昔に読んだ「菊と刀」って本を思い出すわ
なんか（英文だったから？）妙に当たり前のような、でも、
どこか否定したくなりたくなったこと覚えている
often, looking at chrysanthemum, Sarah recalls the days reading “the Chrysanthemum and the Sword” somewhat, could agree but wanted to deny
「菊と刀」は、日本社会の根源にあるものは、恥、恩、義理に象徴されるって書かれていたと記憶するけど、サラが否定したくなったのは、否定できないから、なんかどこかに欠点がないかと無理に否定しようとしていたと思うのよ（ま、若かったしね読んだ頃）
the book tells that Japanese is “shame culture” but at the same time she also described that the culture of “obligation” and social duties, well, somewhat Sarah wanted to deny because it was really telling about Japanese society
著者のルース・ベネディクトは、文化人類学者で、「菊と刀」は、第二次世界大戦中に、
アメリカ軍の要請で日本人、日本社会の研究をしたまとめの本になるんだけど、
そうした背景が、サラにどこかで否定したいって気持ちを持たせていたのかも
the writer, Ruth Benedict was an American anthropologist, and during WWII, she was ordered to research Japanese people and its society by the US Office of War Informantion, probably this background made Sarah want to deny
今思うと、やっぱり著者のルース・ベネディクトってすごいわ！って感動なんだけどね
というのも、確かに・・ずいぶん世の中変わっているけど、でも、
今の日本社会にも通用する権現的な部分をバッサリと刀で切り開いているような内容で、
でも、実はベネディクトは日本には一度も来たことがなかったって事実
whatever, Ruth Benedict’s work is really great, you know although nowadays, the society has changed lots, yet, the book tells the background of our society well, and what amazed Sarah is Ruth Benedict did have any experience in Japan directly
日本に来て実際にある期間ここで生活をしていたら、ある意味体験記を綴ればいいけど、
彼女は全て、アメリカ国内での聞き取り、調査、そして膨大な資料から、
日本社会を構成する日本人の文化を探り出していること
if she came and live in Japan, it might not so hard to find out what is Japanese society, but all of her research was done in US only
ま、きっと軍の全面協力があっただろうけど、
それにしても、よ～くも調べ上げたわって驚きだったのよね・・・
well, may be she was helped by the War Information office substantially though, really her research is amazing
でも、昨今のニュースを聞いていると「恥」を意識する日本人の文化、
確かにずいぶん変わってきているけどね・・・え？一番の恥知らずはサラ？確かに！！
however, nowadays, the sense of shame has been changing, we feel though, oh? Sarah is the good example?
