Morning everyone. Last night I started a beginners course in kyudo, the traditional Japanese martial art. Back in May I went to visit the dojo, the place where they practice. The blog from that time is below↓

I was introduced to Kiuchi san through Roy sans radio show. He was one of Roy sans kyudo friends. This is Kiuchi sans home dojo.

So I just want to thank Roy san for the initial introduction!

And so, yesterday was the first lesson. The target area is outside and has grass which is really nice and serene.

First of all, we watched the highest ranked member shoot. So we could all get an idea of the while movement from start to finish.

The teacher showed us the main movements used in kyudo or hassetsu as they are called in Japanese.

This was the bow, or yumi we used. Its smaller, lighter and has an easy pull weight compared to the real kyudo yumi. So its perfect for beginners. They call it yumi taro or the like the little brother?

We didn't use arrows or ya in Japanese, as the form of movement needs to be correct before holding arrows and shooting arrows.

After a while, the movements were feeling less foreign..

We watched the teacher and did our best to copy with our bodies.

The other teachers spent time one on one with us gently correcting our form as we moved.

The more times the movements are repeated correctly, the faster the body remembers I think

The most important thing I learnt last night overall was that you need to focus on form and continue with correct form from the 1st day.

So happy that I could finally give kyudo a go. I've been wanting to try for ages.
It was only my first time but it was really nice.

Of course there was so much Japanese vocab I had never heard before lol. But its easy to learn Japanese in context so I'm thankful for the challenge.

Having smiles and laughter while learning in a dojo was a really nice feeling that you wouldn't expect from such a traditional martial art.

Anyway, I'll try to practice at home. Looking forward to the next time❗
