航空各社とパイロット組合がFAA（米国連邦航空局）に「パイロットの居眠り」を許可するように要請。FAAは、パイロットが飛行中に居眠りすることを認めていません。

だいぶ前ですが、新幹線でも運転手の居眠りが問題になりましたね。つい先日も特急つばさが居眠り運転で？停車駅に止まらない事件がありました。

やみくもに居眠りを禁止することで、パイロットの注意力が散漫になるよりも、居眠りのルールを設定して、ある程度許可した方が理にかなっているように思います。

Glaxo's Big Bet on Battling Pandemics (WSJ.com)

LONDON -- GlaxoSmithKline PLC has spent five years fashioning itself into a one-stop pandemic shop. Now, as the swine-flu virus sweeps the globe, the U.K.-based drug giant will find out whether the world is buying.

Glaxo began delivering doses of its new H1N1 vaccine this week, the biggest push so far in its multipronged effort to combat, and cash in on, virulent virus strains.

The company has spent more than $3.2 billion on research, acquisitions and extra manufacturing in anticipation of a flu pandemic. Ranging from vaccines and antiviral drugs to medicated face masks and diagnostic tools, Glaxo's portfolio sets it apart from rivals that have tended to focus on one aspect of flu-fighting, such as Sanofi-Aventis SA, which makes vaccines, and Roche Holding AG, which makes the antiviral drug Tamiflu.

米書籍大手バーンズ・アンド・ノーブルが電子書籍端末を来月にも販売開始する予定。クリスマス商戦を睨み、端末市場が過熱してきました。書籍のリアル（書店）販売の縮小とネット販売の拡大の流れに乗っています。

ただアマゾン「キンドル」王国を浸食するのは難しいでしょうね。バーンズ・アンド・ノーブルは「iPhone」や「Blackberry」に書籍データを提供しているので、端末の位置付けも微妙です。

Retailers Post First Sales Gain In Year (WSJ.com)

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. retailers in September collectively posted their first growth in same-store sales since August 2008, with several hopeful signs reported by an industry mired in an extended slump.

The September showing prompted a number of retailers, including Target Corp. (TGT), J.C. Penney Co. (JCP) and Kohl's Corp. (KSS) to issue optimistic earnings outlooks. Meanwhile, Victoria's Secret parent Limited Inc. (LTD) reported its first same-store-sales increase since August 2007.

It's too early to say retailers turned the corner, as the year-to-year comparison benefited from factors including a later start for many schools and weakness last year, making the ability to show growth much easier than had been the case throughout 2009. Retailers have been slow to recover even as other areas of the economy such as manufacturing and home sales have been showing signs of improvement. High unemployment and consumer debt are still clouding the sales outlook, particularly heading into the all-important holiday-shopping season.

Amazon Cuts Kindle Price, Offers International Version (WSJ.com)

Amazon.com Inc. trimmed $40 off the price of its Kindle e-reader and introduced a version of the device with international wireless service, in an effort to combat growing competition in the coming holiday shopping season.

The move drops the price of an entry-level Kindle with a six-inch display to $259--still $60 higher than the entry-level e-reader from Sony Corp., Amazon's rival in the emerging business.

Previous versions of the Kindle have been available only from Amazon's American store, and only had the ability to wirelessly download books inside the U.S. A new $279 premium "U.S. & International" version of the device, which will begin shipping to customers on Oct. 19, will offer wireless service in more than 100 countries.

Australia Rate Rise Poses a Global Policy Challenge (WSJ.com)

Australia on Tuesday became the first Group of 20 country to raise interest rates since the start of the financial crisis, setting the stage for a market-rattling divergence among the world's central banks.

Nations such as Australia, Israel, Norway and Brazil that remained relatively isolated from the economic turmoil of the past 12 months for various reasons now appear to be leaning toward tightening their interest-rate policies to head off inflation.

But central banks in the big economies at the center of the crisis, including the U.S., Europe and the U.K., are still nursing wounded economies and look likely to keep interest rates extremely low for many months to come.
