World Baseball Classic 2013 is to be held in March to determine who is the best baseball team in the world.
Team Japan won the previous two championships. But, this time, Team USA and Team Dominican Republic are the favorites.
Especially, Team USA is a very excellent team with ace pitchers of Major League Baseball teams and the pitching coach Maddux who won a Cy Young Award for 4 consecutive years.
What I was impressed recently about Team USA was a news that Kris Medlen of Atlanta Braves withdraws from WBC for the birth of his child.
“Being asked to play for Team USA was really crazy and awesome,” Medlen said. “But I think I may have jumped the gun committing that early."
His wife Nicki is due to have a son, their first child, in Florida on Feb. 5. To pitch in the WBC, Medlen would have had to leave for Arizona for the spring training.
“It just didn’t seem right to me,” he said. “(Withdrawing) was a no-brainer after I thought about it.”
Medlen worried changing his mind would disappoint people. But, he said Team USA manager Torre understood.
“Torre was like, ‘It looks like you’ve already got it figured out that family always comes first,’” Medlen said.
“I think he made a good call,” Braves manager Gonzalez said. “You only have your first baby once.”
What a good story! I love American people because they are so human and affectionate.
Personally, I am predicting Team USA may play very well this time.

ちなみに、アメリカ代表について、私が最近印象深かったのは、アトランタ・ブレーブスのクリス・メドレン投手が、WBC出場を辞退したことです。お子さんの出産が理由でした。
メドレン投手は、言っています。「WBCアメリカ代表に選ばれて、とっても嬉しかったし、最高の気分だった。でも、結論を出すのが早過ぎたかも知れないと気付いたんだ。」
彼の妻のNickiは、2月上旬に、フロリダで最初の赤ちゃんを出産する予定です。一方、メドレン投手が、WBCに出場するためには、その時期に、アリゾナでキャンプに参加する必要があります。
「これは、良くないなと思ったんだ。そのことに気付いたとき、出場辞退は明らかだった。」と、メドレン投手は言っています。
メドレン投手は、みなをがっかりさせることを心配しました。しかし、WBCアメリカ代表のトーレ監督は、理解してくれたそうです。トーレ監督は、「君は、すでに全てを考え抜いて、家族が一番大切だという結論に達しているみたいだね。」と言ってくれたそうです。
ブレーブスのゴンザレス監督は、「良い決断だと思うよ。最初の赤ちゃん誕生に立ち会えるのは、一生のうち、1回しかないからね。」とコメントしています。
私は、アメリカ人が大好きです。なぜなら、彼らは、とっても人間的で、愛に溢れているからです。
私は、個人的には、今回、アメリカ代表が活躍するような気がしています。
