■Introduction

フリソデウオ科(リボンフィッシュ Ribbonfishes、ディールフィッシュ Dealfishes、およびその近縁種)は、地球全体に分布しており、3属に少なくとも10種が存在する(ユキフリソデウオ属 Zu Walters & Fitch 1960、フリソデウオ属 Desmodema Walters & Fitch 1960、およびサケガシラ属 Trachipterus Goüan 1770、図 1A)。これらの魚(図 1~3)は、細長く、極端に横方向に圧縮された体、大きな目、肋骨がなく、側線鱗に棘があること(Olney ら 1993)、大きく突き出た口(Ferry ら 2019)、成魚には腹鰭がないことが特徴である。また、個体発生中に劇的な形態変化が起こることでも知られている(Hubbs 1925)。フリソデウオ科の分類学と生物地理学に関する研究の多くは、地域的な記述(例:南西太平洋、Ogilby 1898、ニュージーランド、Hamilton 1916、地中海と北東大西洋、Palmer 1961、Lipej et al. 2018、Macali et al. 2020)、北西大西洋、Purchase 2017、東太平洋、Fitch 1964、Angulo & López-Sánchez 2017、タスマニア、Scott 1983、南アフリカ海域、Heemstra & Kannemeyer 1984、日本、Hayashi 2002、韓国、Ji et al. 2009、北太平洋、Savinykh & Baitalyuk 2011)に依存しており、形態学的データは限られており、分析も不完全である。これらの局所的なレビューは地域の生物多様性評価に役立つが、そのような記載では、広範囲に分布している、あるいは地球全体に分布しているとされる種の個体群レベルの違いが説明されない可能性がある。

姉妹群である oarfishes リュウグウノツカイ科 (Regalecidae、Olney ら、1993、図 1B) と同様に、フリソデウオ科は体が壊れやすい (つまり、収集中に損傷を受けることが多い) ため、コレクションにあまり含まれていない。フリソデウオ科の研究のほとんどは、調査された標本数、発育段階、および完全性によって制限されている。成魚に比べて、幼魚のフリソデウオ科は魚類コレクションでより一般的である。

これは、成魚の開放的な外海、多くの場合、深海の生息地と比較して、その個体数が多く、沿岸に近い生息地を占めていることによると考えられる。さらに、稚魚の標本の形態が独特なため、科レベルでは適切に識別できるが、より細かいレベルでは識別できない。フリソデウオ科の分類学レビューや識別キーでは、サケガシラ属とフリソデウオ属の成魚標本とユキフリソデウオ属の稚魚標本を比較し、種の記載をその標本に基づいて行うことは珍しくない (例: Walters & Fitch 1960、Palmer 1961、Fitch 1964、Ji et al. 2009)。比較をさらに複雑にしているのは、フリソデウオ科が個体発生中に受ける劇的な形態変化が、サイズと直接相関していないことである。フリソデウオ科魚類で稚魚の特徴が失われる時期は様々で、ユキフリソデウオ属では比較的遅い時期に発生することがあり、体長 800 mm までの標本では、長い背びれと腹びれの鰭条や、波型腹縁などの稚魚の特徴が保持される (Heemstra & Kannemeyer 1984; JMM、個人観察)。サケガシラ属の標本では、体長 600 mm まで、長い鰭条や斑点状の色素パターンなどの稚魚の特徴が保持される (JMM、個人観察)。Walters & Fitch (1960)、Palmer (1961)、Fitch (1964) による一般的な記載に基づいて、これらの研究における種の診断は、たとえば亜成魚のユキフリソデウオ属のみに基づいていた。種の記載が限られていることが、多くのコレクションで成魚の標本が誤って識別される理由の1つであると考えられる。Heemstra & Kannemeyer (1984) などの最近の研究では、コレクション内の成魚標本の希少性が認められているが、その診断は限定されており、南アフリカ海域で採取された Z. cristatus Bonelli 1820 の成魚標本1個体と Z. elongatus Heemstra & Kannemeyer 1984 の成魚標本2個体のデータのみが含まれている。

入手可能な資料の不足に加え、不完全で矛盾した特徴情報が、フリソデウオ科の分類上の混乱をさらに複雑にしている。例えば、Walters & Fitch (1960)、Palmer (1961)、Fitch (1964)、Scott (1983)、Heemstra & Kannemeyer (1984) はいずれも、サケガシラ属の診断的特徴として、あらゆる成長段階で鱗がないことを指摘しており、これがサケガシラ属をユキフリソデウオ属と区別するのに使われ、一部の著者によると、サケガシラ属をフリソデウオ属と区別するのにも使われている (Rosenblatt & Butler 1977)。しかし、本研究で調べたサケガシラ属の成体標本には鱗がある。したがって、鱗がないと推定されるのは、調査対象の標本の状態によるものであり、属の診断に使うことはできない。フリソデウオ科の属については、発育段階別に区分された世界規模のデータの統合を含む分類学上の改訂が明らかに必要である。これらの魚はコレクションでは比較的まれであるため、研究資料が限られているため、科の包括的なレビュー(地理と個体発生の観点から)が妨げられている。コレクションの資料が蓄積され、海洋の新しい地理的領域がサンプリングされるにつれて、特に成体段階の標本が検査に利用できる数が増える。以前の著者による研究における個体発生と地理的連続体の両方のギャップを埋めるために利用できる標本が増えているため、このレビューはタイムリーである。

フリソデウオ科の分類学を調べた地域的な改訂にもかかわらず、個体発生全体にわたる一連の形態学的特徴を統合したものはない。また、最近の分類学研究で西太平洋のリボンフィッシュの包括的なレビューに焦点を当てたものはない。この科の発育、生物地理、分類に関する文献の混乱により、世界中から集められたサケガシラ属の新しく収集された資料と博物館の標本が調査された。この研究の目的は、1) フリソデウオ科を改訂する、2) サケガシラ属、ユキフリソデウオ属、フリソデウオ属を改訂し、発育と生物地理に関する情報を組み込む、3) 西太平洋(日本、オーストラリア、ニュージーランド周辺の海域に重点を置く)のサケガシラ属、ユキフリソデウオ属、フリソデウオ属のアルファ分類について議論することである。
