獣類と、鳥類と、昆虫との別を問はず、殆んどすべての生物は、夜の灯火に対して不思議なイメーヂと思慕を持つてゐる。海の魚介類は、漁師の漁る灯火の下に、群をなして集つて来るし、山野に生棲する昆虫類は、人家の灯火あかりや弧灯に向つて、蛾群の羽ばたきを騒擾する。鹿のやうな獣類でさへも、遠方の灯火に対して、眼に一ぱいの涙をたたへながら、何時迄も長く凝視してゐるといふことである。思ふに彼等は、夜の灯火といふものに対して、何かの或る神秘的なあこがれ、生命の最も深奥な秘密に触れてゐるところの、不思議な恋愛に似た思慕エロスを感じてゐるにちがひない。
