1966年6月17日、ニュージャージー州パターソン。ボクシングのウェルター級チャンピオン、ハリケーンことルービン・カーター（デンゼル・ワシントン）は強盗殺人事件の犯人として検挙され、翌年終身刑を宣告された。すべては彼を幼年時代から知る仇敵の刑事デラ・ペスカ（ダン・ヘダヤ）のでっちあげ捜査によるものだった。収監後も囚人服の着用を拒み、無罪を主張するため自伝を執筆。74年、こうして出版された自伝『The 16th Round』は反響を呼んで、ボブ・ディラン、モハメド・アリら著名人が釈放活動に乗り出したが、2年後の再審でも有罪判決が下り、彼の存在は次第に世間から忘れられた。だが、隣国カナダのトロントに住むレズラ・マーティン（ヴィセラス・レオン・シャノン）という黒人少年が古本市で見つけた例の自伝に感動し、手紙を送ったことがきっかけで再び希望が。レズラの保護者であるリサ（デボラ・カーラ・アンガー）、テリー、サムら3人もレズラに賛同し、釈放運動のために立ち上がる。85年11月7日、連邦最高裁判所での最後の戦いに挑むルービンと4人。この結果、サロキン判事（ロッド・スタイガー）は再審の有罪判決を覆し、即時釈放を認める判決を下し、ルービンらは歓喜の渦に包まれるのだった。

The film stars Denzel Washington as Rubin "The Hurricane" Carter, a former middleweight boxer who was convicted for a triple murder in a bar in Paterson, New Jersey.
