本来の本の紹介ではなくて申し訳ないのだが、今日も特別企画
第2弾として、私のiTunesのプレイリスト“Legendary Soul 60”
をここに晒そうと思う。私の大好きなソウル・ナンバー60選で
ある。
このリストの中には、すでにソウル・ミュージックの枠を超え
て存在する曲がたくさんある。Michael Jacksonの“Billie Jean”
は「血の否定」という、その後のマイケルの運命を暗示するよ
うな重い社会性を持っているし、村上春樹は『 1Q84 Book1』の
冒頭で『シンフォニエッタ』と同列にこの曲を登場させている。
Princeの“Kiss”は間違いなくロックの名曲でもある。また、80
年代に大ヒット曲を連発したPointer Sistersが1973年に残した
“Yes We Can Can”は、徐々にテンションが上がっていくドラム
に興奮し「これはロックではないか？」という思ってしまう。
やはり「Love」を言葉にする才については黒人アーティストの
右に出る者はいない。キザなのでとてもパクれないような言葉
を情感たっぷりに歌って何の違和感も残さない彼らには、唯々
脱帽するあまりである。
黒人アーティストのかけ声は最高である。白人や黄色人種には
まねできない芸当である。圧巻はJames Brownだが、Joe Tex
の“I Gotcha”の「Come On！」は最もかっこいい「Come On！」
だと思う。
