Since there are so many levels of good diet, at this moment I'd like to focus on a balanced diet for elderly people to help maintain their health. They need carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fats, dietary fiber and water. Carbohydrates and fats are energy giving foods. Only glucose is the energy source of the brain and only fat is the energy source of the heart. Both are essential, but not too much. Proteins help in growth and repair of body. Elderly people tend to eat less protein, but they should actively get proteins from meat, fish, soy beans and eggs. Minerals and vitamins mainly regulate immune system to protect against infections. Dietary fiber is undigestable and reduce LDL-cholesterol levels. Water also plays an important roles in our body. Water helps us to get rid of liquid body wastes in the form of sweat and urine. Dehydration is especially dagerous for elderly people.
All elements are important and we should take the right amount of food with medical checkup and maintaining proper body weight.
Again, we need to eat food to live well and we can enjoy our meals with a good appetite if we are healthy. The most important purpose of diet is to stay healthy and happy. Extreme diet methods might cause some vitamin deficiencies or mulnutrition. Please remember we are each in chrge of our own health!!
