This is an old story , but it is still fresh that many people say
"Oh, I see. I completely understand my situation from that story. Thank you so much,"
when I tell them the analogy in my clinic.
Hedgehogs are very cute mammmals with sharp quills on their backs and both body sides.
During cold weather they try to get close to one another to share their body temparature.
But ouch! It's painful. They can't avoid hurting one another with their sharp quills, if they want to be closer together. They don't want to hurt themselves, so they step away from one another. However, once they are separated, they feel cold again, and they approach closer. Of course they eventually hurt one another again...They don't want to be cold nor in pain.
After several attempts, they find the optimal distance in which it is both safe and warm, and they look very happy.
Arthur Schopenhauer made this story and Sigmund Freud used it to describe the proper distance for human relationships.
This is a good story.
I like it very much.
