今からもう60年近くも前、PP＆M（ピーター・ポール&マリー）が、この曲、ボブ・ディランさんのBlowin' in the Wind（風に吹かれて）を歌う前に、メンバーの一人ピーター・ヤーロウさんはとても意味の深いことを口にしてます。
それは言葉少な気ながら、心に訴えかけてきます（もちろん、今だからこそ、曲も物凄く訴えてきますが）。以下、引用させて頂きます（訳が誤っていたらごめんなさいね）。
“This song asks nine questions. The answer to these questions could determine the faith of all of us in this next generation”
