この国ではサーモンは養殖されており

常にスーパーの店頭に並ぶ

人気食材の一つとして親しまれている。

ところがその筋子は長い間

廃棄処分されていたと聞く。

食べられる物として

認識されていなかった為だ。

どうやらアジア人が

好んで食べるらしいと分かり

店頭に並ぶ様になり始めたのは

今からどれくらい前だったろうか。

既に帰国した友人が

スーパーで筋子を見つけたと

狂喜乱舞していた記憶があるから

かれこれ20年以上も前の事かもしれない。

当時はそんな筋子が嘘の様に

安価で買えた。

確か500g前後入っていそうなパックが

$10もしていなかったと思う。

筋子は季節になったからと言って

常に店頭に出ているとは限らない

文字通り有難い存在だ。

出るとFacebook等の

日本人コミュニティーで情報が共有される。

当初は筋子が安価だったため

見つけた時に大量に買い置き

イクラの醤油漬けにしては

小分けに冷凍して

何週間もイクラを堪能するのが

密かな楽しみだった。

ところが需要が高まった為か

価格は年々上昇していった。

全く店頭で見ない年は陰謀論よろしく

某国出身者が店頭に並ぶ前に

買い占めているという噂が

まことしやかに流れたものだ。

そんな筋子も今や1キロ$99.99である。

１パックが$40〜＄60と平気でする。

ここまで来ると買えないわけではないか

買いたくはない。

私は微力ながら不買運動を始めた。

一消費者としてのささやかな抵抗である。

そして本日ついに

筋子がスペシャル価格で登場していた。

なんと1キロ$65.99

1キロあたり$34お安い計算だ。

恐らくこれ以上は下がるまい。

私は不買運動を一時休止することに決めた。

Back then, salmon roe was incredibly affordable, with a generous 500g pack costing less than $10. Its availability was sporadic, making each sighting a true delight. Information about its presence would be shared within Japanese communities like Facebook. Whenever I stumbled upon it, I would stock up and freeze small portions to savor over weeks.

Over time, the demand for salmon roe surged, leading to a steady increase in its price. There were even times when it disappeared from shelves completely, fueling rumors of hoarding by individuals from a specific country. Nowadays, the once budget-friendly delicacy sells for a steep price of $99.99 per kilo, with individual packs fetching $40-$60.

While I can afford this luxury now, I've chosen to boycott as a small act of consumer resistance. However, a recent sale offering sujiroe at $65.99 per kilo tempted me to pause my protest. With the price unlikely to drop further, I've decided to indulge in this treat while keeping an eye on future developments.
