The Four Key Concepts of Enryakuji

2.Nihon Bukkyo no Bozan   "The Birthplace of Japanese Buddhism"

Enryakuji on Mount Hiei was founded as a comprehensive center for training in all of the various traditions of Buddhist practice, including meditation, esoteric ritual, and Pure Land devotion.

For this reason, many eminent monks who studied and practiced at Enryakuji later went on to spread these teachings by founding new sects of Japanese Buddhism.

Consequently, Mount Hiel has come to be respectfully referred to as "the Birthplace of Japanese Buddhism."

In Mount Hiei's Daikodo Hall are displayed statues of those monks who became founders of Japanese Buddhist sects.
