「あらすじ」
お椀山で子供たちがつぎつぎと意識を失ったという報告を聞いて、町で開業の内科医で、同時に 学校医の中沢重一（５３歳）は、現場に駆けつける。一部の生徒たちは意識を回復しつつあったが、他のものたちは まだ地面に倒れていた。
32 I soon snapped out of it, though, and picked up one of the children, a little girl. He body had no strength in it at all and was limp as a rag doll. Her breathing was steady but she was still unconscious. He eyee, though, were open, tracking something back and forth. I pulled a small flashlight out of my bag and shone it on her pupils.Completely unreactive. Her eyes were functioning, watching something, yet showed no response to light. I picked up several other children and examined them and they were all exactly the same, unresponsive. I found this quier bizarre.
I was checked their pulse and temparature. Their pulse were between 50 and 55, and all of them had temparature just below 97°。 Somehhere around 96°or thereabouts, as I recall. That's correcct - for children of that age this pulse rate is well below normal, the body temparature m, more than one degree below average. I smelled their breath, but theer was nothing out of ordinary. Likewise with their throat and tongues.

55 しかし私はすぐに気を取り直し、倒れている子供を抱き上げました。女の子でした。身体からいっさいの力が抜け、布人形のようにだらん としています。呼吸は安定していますが、意識はありません。しかしその目は普通に開いていて、左右に動きながら何かを見ています。私は 鞄から小型の懐中電灯を出して、瞳を照らしました。反応はありません。目は機能して何かを見続けているにもかかわらず、光に反応しないのです。 不思議なことです。私は何人かの子どもたちを抱き起して、同じことを試してみましたが、反応はそっくり同じでした。
それから、私は子どもたちの脈拍と体温を測りました。脈拍は平均しておよそ５０から５５，体温は全員が３６°を切っていたと記憶して います。35℃半ばくらいだったのではないでしょうか。はい、その年齢の子どもとしては脈拍はかなり遅いし、体温も１℃ばかり低めになっています。 息をかいでみましたが、妙な匂いはまったくありません。喉も舌も変化はありません。
33 I immediately ascertained these weren't the symptoms of food poisoning. Not one of them had vomitted or suffered diarrheas and none of them seemed to be in any pain. If the children had esten something bad you could expect-- with this much time having elapsed-- the onset of at least one of these symptoms. I heaved a sigh of relief that it wasn't food poisoning. But then I was stumped, since I hadn't a clue what was wrong with them.
The symptoms were similar to sunstroke. Kids often collapse from this in the summer. It's like it's contagious -- one of them collapses their friends all do the same, one after the other. But this was November, in a cool wood, no less. One or two getting sunstroke is one thing, but 16 children simultaneous coming down with it was out of the question.

55 食中毒でないことは一目で判断できました。誰も吐いていません。誰も下痢してはいません。誰も苦しんではいません。悪いものを食べた 場合、これだけの時間が経過すれば、その三つの症状のうちのどれか一つは必ずやってきます。食中毒でないとわかって、とりあえず胸をなでおろし ました。しかしじゃあ、いったい何が起こったのかということになります。さっぱり見当がつきません。
症状として似ているのは日射病です。夏には子供たちはよく日射病で倒れます。一人が倒れますと、まるで伝染するみたいに、まわりの 子どもたちもばたばたと倒れることがあります。しかし、季節は11月です。おまけに涼しい森の中です。一人や二人なだまだしも、16人の子どもたち 全員がそんなところで日射病に夏というのは考えられないことです。
33 My next thought was some kind of poison gas, either naturally occuring or man-made. But how in the world could gas appear in the middle of the woods in such a remote part of the country? I couldn't account for it. Poison gas, though, would logically explain what I saw that day. Everyone breathed it in, went unconscious and collapsed on the spot. The hpmeroom teacher had not collapsed because the concentration of gas wasn't strong enough to affect an adult.
When it came to treatment the children, though. I was totally at a loss. I'm just a simple country doctor and have no special expertise in poison gases, so I was out of my league. We were out in this remote town and I couldn't very well ring up a specialist. Very gradually, in fact, some of the children were bgetting better, and I figured that perhaps with time they would all regain consciousness. I know it's a overly optimistic view, but at the time I couldn't think of anything else to do. So I suggested that we just let them lie there quietly for a while and see what developed.
I couldn't account for it. = わたしにはわかりません。

56 あとおもいつくのは、ガスです。毒ガス、おそらく神経性ガスみたいなもの。天然のものか、 じんこうのものか・・・。どうしてこんな人里離れた森の中にガスが発生したりするのかと訊ねられても、 私にはわかりません。しかし、仮にそれが毒ガスであれば、このような現象は論理的に説明がつきます。 みんなが空気と一緒にそれを吸いこんで、意識を失って倒れてしまった。担任の先生だけが大丈夫だった のは、濃度が薄くて、大人の身体はたまたまそれに対抗できたからだというわけです。
しかしこれに対してどのように治療を施せばいいかというと、まったく五里霧中です。私は このように田舎の町医者ですし、特殊な毒ガスについての専門知識など持ち合わせておりません。 ただ途方に暮れるばかりです。山の中ですから専門家に電話で問い合わせることもなりません。 ただ実際問題として、子どもたちのうち何人かは徐々に回復の兆候を見せているわけですから、時間がたてば 自然に意識は戻ってくるかもしれません。あくまで楽観的な見通しですが、正直なところそれにかわる良い案 も思い浮かびませんでした。だから今しばらくそこに安静に寝かせておいて、様子を見てみようということに なりました、

「そのあたりの空気には、何か変わったところはありませんでしたか？」
34 I was concerned about that myself, so I took several deep breaths to see if I could detect any unusual odor. But it was just the smell of a wood in the hills. It waws a bracing scent, fragrance of trees. Nothing unusual about the plants and flowers around there, either. Nothing had changed shape or been discolored.
One by one I examined the mushrooms the children had been picking. There weren't all that many, whichi led me to conclude that were normal edible mushrooms. I've been a doctor here for some time and am quite familiar with the different varieties. Of course, to be on the safe side I collected them all and took them back and had an expert examine them. As far as I could tell, though, they were all your-common-of garden, edible mushroom.
It was a bracing scent. bracing = 爽やかな。身を引き締めるような。
Nothing had changed shape or been discolored. 変形したり、変色したものはありません。

57 そのことは私も気になりましたので、なにか普通でない匂いがしたりしないかと、その 場所の空気を何度か深く吸い込ん見ました。しかし普通の山の中の森の空気です。樹木の匂いがします。 すがすがしい空気です。あたりの草花にも変化は見られません。変形したもの、変色したものもみあたり ません。
私は子どもたちが倒れる前に取ったらしいキノコをひとつひとつ点検してみました。それほど 沢山の数ではありません。おそらく集め始めてほどなく倒れてしまったのでしょう。どれもみんな、ごく 普通の食用になるキノコでした。私はこのあたりでずっと意思をしておりますし、キノコの種類には かなり詳しい方です。もちろん念には念をいれてそれらを集めて持ってかえり、あとで専門家に点検して もらいました。しかし私の見た通り、すべて毒性のないごく普通のキノコでした。
