Enter KING CLAUDIUS and LAERTES
国王、レアティーズ登場
KING CLAUDIUS:
Now must your conscience my acquaintance seal,
And you must put me in your heart for friend,
Sith you have heard, and with a knowing ear,
That he which hath your noble father slain
Pursued my life.
my acquintance seal = confirm my acquittal (as guiltless of misdeeds you have addituted to me).
with a knowingly ear = Leates is an intelligent listner, says the ingratiating King.
国王：
これでお前もわたしの潔白を認め、
心からわしを味方とわかってくれたろう。
その耳ではっきりたしかめたであろうように、
お前の父親を殺した奴が、わしの命も
狙っておるのだ。
LAERTES：
It well appears: but tell me
Why you proceeded not against these feats,
So crimeful and so capital in nature,
As by your safety, wisdom, all things else,
You mainly were stirr'd up.
feats = deeds.
capital = punishment by death.
safety = your care for your own safety.
withdom = political prudence.
mainly = strongly.
レアティーズ：
それはよくわかりました。しかし、
そのような恐るべき大罪にたいして、なぜいつまで
断固たる処置をとらなかったのですか？ その身は
安全、叡慮、その他どの点から考えても、陛下こそ
うち捨てはおっかれぬはず。
KING CLAUDIUS：
O, for two special reasons;
Which may to you, perhaps, seem much unsinew'd,
But yet to me they are strong. The queen his mother
Lives almost by his looks; and for myself--
My virtue or my plague, be it either which--
She's so conjunctive to my life and soul,
That, as the star moves not but in his sphere,
I could not but by her. The other motive,
Why to a public count I might not go,
Is the great love the general gender bear him;
Who, dipping all his faults in their affection,
Would, like the spring that turneth wood to stone,
Convert his gyves to graces; so that my arrows,
Too slightly timber'd for so loud a wind,
Would have reverted to my bow again,
And not where I had aim'd them.
unsinew'd = without strength.
my virtue on my plague, be it either which = whether it is a good aide of my chractoer or a serious n\misfortune (that I have these feelings contrary to my self-interest).
conjunctive = closely united.
the star moves not but in his sphere = in astronomy, before Coprtnicus, the earth, at the center of the universe, was believed to be surmounted by a series of hollow transparent concentric spheres.
I could not but by her = I could not live without her.
count = trial.
general gender = common people.
the spring that turneth wood to stone = 木を石に変える泉。
国王：
その理由は二つある。
おまえにはとるにたらぬことにみえるかも知れぬが、
わしには重大な理由なのだ。母親の妃は一日たりとも
あれの顔を見ずに生きていけぬ女、そしてわしは、
いいか悪いかは知らぬが、その妃こそ
魂の糧とも頼む身、星がその軌道を離れて、
動くことがないように、わしも妃を離れては
なにひとつなしえまい。もう一つ、おもてだって
罪を正しえぬ理由は、あれに対する
一般民衆の人気なのだ。あれを愛するあまり、
木をほおりこむとたちまち石に化する泉のように、
あの欠点までも美点と思い込み、足枷をはめても
身の飾りと見る始末。したがってわしが矢をはなっても
世間を吹き荒れるこの強風にはあまりにも無力、
狙いが外れるどころか、逆に弓をもつ
わが身にふきもどされてきかねぬのだ。
LAERTES：
And so have I a noble father lost;
A sister driven into desperate terms,
Whose worth, if praises may go back again,
Stood challenger on mount of all the age
For her perfections: but my revenge will come.
desperate terms = a condition of desparair.
if praise my go beck again = if one may praise what has been and is now no more.
stood challenger .. of all the age = was able to challenge all competitors in the world nowadays.
on mount = conspicuously, g\for all to see.
レアティーズ：
そのおかげで立派な父を失い、
妹をみじめな狂気に追いやられてしまった。
いまさら褒めたたえてももと取り返しはつかぬが、
妹はいつの時代にたいしてもひけをとらぬ
女の鏡であった。必ず恨みははらすぞ。
KING CLAUDIUS：
Break not your sleeps for that: you must not think
That we are made of stuff so flat and dull
That we can let our beard be shook with danger
And think it pastime. You shortly shall hear more:
I loved your father, and we love ourself;
And that, I hope, will teach you to imagine--
break not your sleep for that =
let our bread be shook wiith danger = allows such insulting behavious to come close to me.
you shortly shall hear more = Claudius had in mind the news he expects of Hamlet's execution in England. But soon quite didderent news arrives.
国王：
ま、夜も眠れぬほど思い詰めぬげいい。
わしとて、危険の火の粉が髭を焦がさぬのを
のんびり見物しておるほどの愚かではないし、
腰抜けでもない。いづれ詳しく話そう。
わしはお前の父親を愛していた、そして国王は
わが身を愛するもの、と言えば察しはつくだろうーー
