63 "It's amazing," said Whilhelm, but he said it in a rather distant way. He was always hearing such stories from Tamkin. If you were to beloieve Tamkin, most of the world was like this. Everybody in the hotel had a mental disorder, a secrete history, a concealed disease. The wife of Rubin at the newstand was supposed to be kept by Carl, the yelling, loud-mouthed gin-rummy player.
The wife of Frank in the barbershop had disappeared with a GI while he was waiting for her to disembark at the French Lines pier. Everyone was like the faces on a playing card, upside down either way. Every public figure had a character neurosis. Maddest of all were the businessmen, the heartless, flaunting, boisterous business class who ruled this country with their hard manners and their bold lies and their absurd words that nobody could believe. They were crazier than anyone. They spread the plague. Wilhelm, thinking of the Rojac\x Corporation, was inclined to agree that many businessmen were insane. And he supposed that Tamkin, for all his peculiarities, spoke a kind of thruth and did some people a sort of good. It confirmed Whilhelm's suspicions to hear that there was a plague, and he said, "I couldn't agree with you more. They trade on anything, they steal everything, they're cynical to the bones."

63 「驚きましたね」とウィルヘルムはいったが、あまり気のない言い方だった。タムキン博士からいつも そんな話を聞いていた。タムキンのいうことを信じるとすると、世間の大半の人はそういう人間になってしまう。 このホテルにいる誰もが精神異常者、秘密の過去、他人に言えない病気を持っていることになる。新聞売り場に いるルービンの妻は、わめきたて騒々しい声をあげるジン・ラミーの名手カールと関係があることになる。
理髪店ののフランクの妻は、フランクがフランス航路の埠頭で待っているあいだにGIと姿を消して しまった。すべての人間はトランプ・カードのように、どっちから見ても逆さまな二つの顔をもっていた。 世間で知られている人物はどれもこれも性格的な神経症にかかっている。なかでも最も狂っているのは 実業家たちで、この非情で、これ見よがしで、そうぞうしい実業家階級ときたら、冷酷な態度と、誰も 信じないような大胆な嘘や途方もない言語でこの国を支配している。あの連中は誰よりも気違いじみている。 疫病をまき散らす。ウィルヘルムは、ロジャックス社のことを思って、多くの実業家たちが気違いだという 点に賛成した。タムキンは風変わりなところはあるにしても、ある種の真実を語っていて、ある人たち には何らかの意味で役に立っているのだろう。実業家どもが疫病を舞い散らすというのをきくと、ウィルヘルムの 疑惑を裏付けてくれているような気がしてこう言った。「まったくその通りですよ。あの連中ときたら なんでも商売の材料にするし、なんでもかっぱらう。骨の髄まで冷酷なんですよ」
64 "You have to realize," said Tamkin, speaking of his patient, or his client, "that the mother's confession isn't good. It's a confession of duress. I try to tell the young fellow he shouldn't worry about a phony confession. But what does it help him if I am rational with him.
"No?" said Whilhelm, intensly nervous. "I think we ought to go over to the market. It'll opening pretty soon."
"Oh, come on," said Tamkin. "It isn't even nine o'clock, and there isn't mach trading the first hour anyway. Things don't get hot in Chicago until half-past ten, and they're an hour behind us, don't forget. "
the mother's confession isn't good. = 正しくない。 good = correct = 正しい。
good ： ① よい、優れた。② 適した、望ましい。③ 立派な、公正な、正しい。
good といえば、①、②が 最初に出てくる。、③は なかなか出てこないなあ。
it's a confession of duress = 強制された告白。
■ duress = 脅迫、強要。強制。監禁。拘束。 under duress = 脅迫されて。
■ they're an hour behind us = 時差が一時間もある。← シカゴは我々より一時間遅れだ。
guilt-aggression cycle = 罪悪感と攻撃性のサイクル。
■ straighten your collar = 真面目に聞いてもらいたいね。
63 「きみが認識線といかんのは、母親の告白が正しくないということだよ」とタムキンは、患者、つまり 客のことを話題にして言った。「強制された告白なのさ。偽の告白なんか気にするなと、若いやつに教えて やろうと思ってね。しかし、わたしが理屈を言ってみたって役に立つはずがないさ」
「そうですかね？ とウィルヘルムはひどく苛立ちそうに言った。「私たちは市場に出かけ なきゃなりませんね。もう、開くころでしょう」
「まあ、落ち着けよ」とタムキンは言った。まだ九時にもなっていないし、いずれにしても 最初の一時間はそんなに出来高はいかないものさ。シカゴは１０時半まで熱気を帯びることはないし、 時差が一時間あることを忘れないでくれよ。いずれにしても、ラードは上がる。あがるんだよ。 わたしの言うことを信用するんだね。相場の背後にある罪悪感と攻撃性のサイクルを研究したんだ。 当然そういうことはよくわかっている。まじめに聞いてもらいたいね」
64 "But meantime," said Wilhelm, "we have taken a licking this week. Are you sure your insight is at its best? Maybe when it isn't we should lay off and wait."
■ taka a licking = やられました。
■ licking = defeat = 敗北、
■ your insight is at its best? = あなたの勘が冴えている
■ lay off and wait = 一服して待つ。
63 「しかし、さしあたって今週はわれわれはよ。あなたの勘が冴えているのは 確かですか？ 冴えていないんなら、一服して待ってみるのはどうですかね」

商品取引も株式取引も共通点はある、と思う。
まず、「第一法則」は、知らない商品（株）には手を出さない、ということである。
ウィルヘルムはタムキンの言うままにラードの商品取引の手を出す。
これまでの物語から、ウィルヘルムが「商品取引」にも「ラード」にも熟知しているとは 思えない。お金が無くなって、藁をもつかむ思いでタムキンにお金を渡す。
結果は、明らかである。ラードは上がらない。これがもし「信用取引」で、ラードが 下がった場合には、タムキンに渡した以上のお金を取引所に払うことになる。
破滅は目に見えている。
それはそれとして、その過程でウィルヘルムはタムキンになんと言いくるめられるのだろう。
"Seize the Time 時をつかめ・・この本のタイトル”といわれるのだろう。
そして、タムキンはどのように時をつかむのだろうか。
そろそろ、この小説も佳境が近づいてきた。
この本の著者ソール・ベローはこれまで、ウィルヘルムを冷酷に突き放してきた。
