He said to Whilhelm, "Watch. You'll get a big kick out of this and wonder why more people don't get into it. You think the Wall Street guys are so smart--genious? That's because most of us are psychologically afraid to think about the details. Tell me this. When you're on the road, and you don't understand what goes on under the hood of your car, you'll worry what'll happen if something goes wrong with the engine. Am I wrong?" No, he was right. "Well," said Dr. Tamkinwith an expression of quiet triumph about his mouth, almost the suggestion of a jeer. "It's the same psychological principle, Whilhelm. They are rich because you don't understand what goes on. But it's no mystery, and by putting in a little money and applying certain principles of observation, you begin to grasp it. It can't be studies in the abstract. You have to take a specimen risk so that you feel the prosess, the money-flow, the whple complex. To know how it feeks to be a seaweed you have to get in the water. In a very short time we'll taka out a hundred-per-cent profit." Thus Wilhelm had had to pretend at the couset that that his interest in the market was theoretical.

61 タムキン博士はふたりが似合いの紳士であって、ラードと穀物の先物を試しにかってみるという 態度をとった。二人のどっちににとっても、二，三百ドルの金はたいしたことはない。タムキンは ウィルヘルムに言った。「見てみろよ。きみは今度の取引ですっかり興奮しちまって、なぜもっと 多くの人間が取引をやらないのかと思うようになるぜ。きみはウオール街のやつにとってはとっても 抜け目のない天才なんかだと思っているんじゃないか？ それは、われわれの大部分が心理的に恐ろしく なって、細かい部分を考えようとしないからさ。たとえば、こんな話がある。あんたが道路を走っていて、 車のフードのしたで機械がどういう仕掛けになっているかをわからないとする。もしエンジンに故障が 起きたらどうなるか心配になるだろう？ そうじゃないかね？」 そう、その通りだ。「うん」と タムキン博士は、ほとんど嘲笑を思わせるような、静かな勝利に表情をみせれ言った。「基本的には同じような心理だよ、 ウィルヘルム君。どういう仕掛けになっているかわからないからお金持ちなのさ。しかし、不思議でも なんでもない。わずかな金を入れて、ある種の観察原理を応用すると、つかめるようになる。抽象的に 研究するわけにはいかないよ。金の流れとか全体の複雑さとか、その手順が感じられるように試みに 危険を冒してみることだよ。海藻であることはどういう感じがするかを知りたければ、水の中にはいらなきゃ いかん。ごく短時間で、百パーセントの利益があがるさ」こうウィルヘルムは出発点において市場への 関心が理論を知るためのものという顔をしなければならなかった。
61 "Well, said Tamkin when he met him now in the lobby, "what's the problem, what is the family situation? Tell me." He put himself forward as the keen mental scientist. Whenever this happened Whilihelm didn't know what to reply. No matter what he said or did it seemed that Dr. Tamkin saw through him.
"I had some words with my dad."
Dr. Tamkin found nothing extraordinary in this. "It's the eternal same story," he said. "The elemental conflict of parent and child. It won't end ever. even with a fine old gentlrman like your dad."

61 「ところで」といまウィルヘルムとロビーで会ったときにタムキンは言った。「どういう問題かね？ その家族のごたごたというのは？ はなしてごらん」 彼は自分から鋭利な心理学者だと称していた。こういう事態 になると、ウィルヘルムはどう返事していいかわからなかった。何を言おうと何をしようと、タムキン博士は 見通しているような気がした。
「おやじとちょっといいあったんですよ」
「タムキン博士はそれを異常なこととは考えなかった。「そりゃ、永遠に繰りかえされる話でね。親と子という 基本的な闘争だよ。絶対に、終わるもんじゃない。きみのおやじさんのような立派な紳士とでも起きるんだ」
61 "I don't suppose it will. I've never been able to get anywhere with him. He thinks they're sordid. I upset him and he gets mad at me. But maybe all ald men are alike."
"Sons, too. Take it from one of them," said Dr. Tamkin. "All the same, you should be proud of such a fine old patriarch of a father. It should give you hope. The longer he lives, the longer your life expectancy becomes."
sordid = 汚い。不潔な。むさくるしい。下品な。感情が卑しい。
■ get anywhere with him = うまくいく。
■ It won't get you anywhere. = そんなことをしてもなにもならないよ。
patriarch = 家長。
61 ぼくも終わるとは思いませんね。おやじ相手にうまくいったためしがないんですよ。おやじは ぼくの感情に反対するわけです。感情が卑しいというわけでね。ぼくはおやじを狼狽させ、おやじは ぼくに腹をたてる。しかし、老人はみんなそんなものなんでしょうね」
「息子だってそうだよ。息子の場合を考えてごらんよ。いずれにしろ、きみはああいう立派な 老家長をもったのを誇りに思わなくちゃいけないな。きにに希望を与えてくれる人物だよ。お父さんが よけいに生きてくれれば、あんたの生きる見込みのそれだけ長くなるわけだ」
62 Whilhelm answered, brooding, "I guess do. But I think I inherit more from my mother's side, and she died in her fifties."
"A problem arose between a young fellow I'm trereating and his dad--I just had a consultation," said Dr. Tamkin as he removed his dark gray hat.
"So early in the morning? " said Whilhelm with suspicion.
"Over the telephone, of course."
she died in her fifties = 母は50代で死にましてね。
62 ウィルヘルムはじっと考えみながら答えた。「そうかもしれませんね。しかし、ぼくは母の 遺伝のほうが強くって、母は50代で死にましてね」
「わたしが治療している青年とその父親の間に問題が起こって――ついさっき相談にのったところ だけど」とタムキンは黒っぽいグレイの帽子を脱ぎながら言った。
「こんなに朝早くにですか？」とウィルヘルムは疑わし気に言った。
「もちろん電話でだよ」

朝食時に、テレビが恒例の「箱根駅伝」の中継をしていた。
どこかの大学の黒人留学生が先頭を走っている。青学は第一集団の中で４位に落ちる。走る選手のフォームに無理がある。
そのうち、やがてどんどん追い抜かれ、第二集団の後方に消える。
一時期栄華を誇った名門も、いつもトップというわけにはいかないのだろう。
蒲田の交差点あたりには見覚えのある風景が残っている。主要な選手たちが多摩川を渡ったところでテレビを消す。
昼にテレビをつけると、青学は先頭で山登りをしている。とうやら、二区あたりから
連続して区間賞をとったらしい。
わたしは、人間が平地を走るのはいいが、こんな雨の中、零度近くの天候で山登りするとは。監督は自分は暖かい車の中で、「がんばれ、がんばれ」という。沿道の観衆も「がんばれ、がんばれ」という。新聞社、マスコミもみんな「がんばれ、がんばれ」と選手を痛めつける。
資本主義、商業主義が行き過ぎだ。せめて「箱根」に価値があるのなら「甲子園」大会のように、関東だけでなく、全国の大学にも参加資格を開放すればいいのに。
