私（語り手）の趣味は、赤ん坊の表情をみてそれ（it）（彼 he または 彼女 she）が２０年後にどういう生活を送っているか、 を想像することであるという。
母親が席をはずした隙に、斜め前の座席置き去りにされたその彼は２０年後には遊び人で、語り手と酒場で、株の話をする。
といっても、彼は赤ん坊でまだ言葉はしゃべれない。顔や口の表情で想像力を働かす。
He gave a high wail of pain--you could have mistaken the cause for wind, but I knew better. In this club they didn't have to serve dill water. I said, 'I don't agree, mind you,' and he stopped crying and blew a buble--a little tough white one which lingered on his lip.
I caught his meaning at once. 'My round,' I said. 'Time for a short?'
He nodded.
彼は苦痛に泣き叫んだ－その原因を 風のせいとも考えられる げっぷのせいだと考えた人もいるだろう が、わたしには分かっていた。彼のクラブではイノンド水を出す必要はなかった。 わたしは言った。「わたしは受け入れないけどね」。すると彼は泣き止み泡を吐き出した－小さくて壊れにくいその白い泡は唇の上でなかなか消えなかった。
わたしは直ちに彼の意味がわかった。「わたしのおごりだ」とわたしは言った。「今度は強い酒を飲む？」
彼は頷いた。

dill = ディル、イノンド。[ハーブの一種。香辛料]。
dill water = イノンド水。
spittle = 唾。唾液。
My round. Time for a short? = わたしのおごりだ。今度は強い酒を飲む？
my round = 私のおごりだ。
short = 強い酒 [ウイスキー、ラム酒など]。
"I don't know what you would advice," I said, "but surely Tobacos are about as low as they will go. When you think Imps were a cool 80/- in the early Thirties and now you can pick them up for under 60/-... This cancer scare can't go on. People have got to have their fun."
「君のお薦めはわからないが、《たばこ》は今が底値だ。《インペリアル》は三十年代の 初めには たった なんと八十シリングだったのに、今では六十シリング以下で買えることを思えば ・・・癌になる心配は 長くは続かないよ。人は楽しみを持つべきだよ」
