GATE is not only for M.Tech admissions. For many engineers it is the main door into public sector companies. Here is how to plan for it.
Pick the right paper
Each PSU lists the GATE papers it accepts for each discipline, for example ME for mechanical, EE for electrical, CS for IT roles. Check last year's notices of the companies you want before registering.
Know the timeline
- GATE registration: around August to October.
- Exam: February.
- Results: March.
- PSU applications: mostly January to April, using the GATE registration number.
Typical selection
Shortlisting on GATE marks, then group discussion and/or interview, then medical. GATE usually carries most of the final weight.
Do not forget the second step
Many candidates clear the cut-off but never apply to the PSU itself. Each company runs its own application window.
