I could hardly believe my ears. We
candidates saw Reverend Mother Abbess
only from afar in choir. We were the
lowest of the low, living on the out-
skirts of the novitate, wearing our black
mantillas, waiting with eager anticipation
for our reception into the novitate.

私は耳を疑いました．私たち修習生が修道先生に
会えるのは、聖歌隊で歌っているとき、遠くで見
るだけですから. 修習生の序列は修道女候補生の
中でも一番下だったのです．黒のマンティーラを
かぶってはいるが、候補生に迎え入れられるのを、
今か今かと待つ身分でした．

can hardly + 動詞 ＝ ほとんど～できない
動詞は believe で can が過去ですから、「ほとん
ど信じられなかった」 何を？ ear 耳を．
私は、my ear 自分の耳をほとんど信じられなかっ
た、つまり私は自分の耳を疑った．
anticipation は 期待して待つこと．eagar は 熱望し
ながら、ということで
eagar anticipation / 期待熱望しながら待つ、という
ことです.
