But all that came later. First the blue
bus drove to Easton, Pennsylvania, up the
steep hill to Lafayette College for our
first concert. Mr. Wagner and all his
office staff had come. All of a sudden
we became conscious of the fact that
this was not just another country——this
time we had crossed an ocean ; this was
now a new continent, and tonight was
the first concert. Would it be a success
or a failure ?

さてまず青バスが、ペンシルヴェニア州イース
トンを走り、急勾配の丘を上がって、最初のコ
ンサート会場、ラファイエット・カレッジに向
かった．そこにワーグナー氏と事務所スタッフ
全員が先に来ていました．突然、私たちは、こ
こが単に別の国の会場ではない、という事実に
気づかされたのです．——今回は大海原を渡っ
てきたのだ．ここは新大陸なのだ．そして今宵
がその初めてのコンサートとなるのだ．さて、
成功するやら、失敗に終わるやら、神のみぞ
知る！
