There were news stands with so terrifi-
cally many different papers and magazines,
and the newspapers themselves of the size
of sheets for a baby's bed. Enchanted,
we watched men climbing on something
like a throne and cute little colored boys
falling over their shoes in a holy fury
until they were as shiny as mirrors— and
this right on the street !

通りにはあちこち新聞を売る売店スタンドが
ありました．実にさまざまな新聞や雑誌が売ら
れています．そして新聞はサイズが大きくて、
それ自体ベビーベッドのシーツほどの大きさな
のです．玉座のようなところに登っていく男の
人に私たちは目を見張りました．そこへ黒人の
男の子たちがその紳士の靴の前にしゃがみ込み、
聖なる凄まじさを発揮し、まるで鏡かと思える
ほどにピカピカに磨き上げるのです．——それ
も、この路上で！
