When the train stopped for good and all
the people got out, I learned that I was
far away from the Bronx. The funniest
thing of all was that the subway had
been metamorphosed into an elevated, and
instead of walking up to the street, I
had to walk down. There I was com-
pletely forlorn. But again to my rescue—
a plliceman. This time he was sitting in
a car.

列車はずっと止まったままでした．車内の乗客は
全員降りて行きました．そのときやっとわかった
のですが、私はブロンクスとは全く違う場所に来
ていたのでした．何がおかしいといって、この地
下鉄、いつのまにやら高架鉄道に変身しているの
です．なので降りてからは、地上に歩いて上がる
のではなく、階段を降りていくことになるのでし
た．さて降りてからは、すっかり途方にくれまし
た．しかしまたしても私に救いの手——警察官
がいたのです．今回は車に乗って現れました．
