We needed a laundry. As with evry-
thing els, it was a question of money.
One morning the boys, who had walked
back from Mass a different way, told us
triumphantly they had discovered the
cheapest laundry in town, a Chinese man
who asked six cents for a pound. We
collected all our dirty laundry. The
Chinaman came and smiled and nodded.

私たちが困っていたのは洗濯でした．他のこ
とと同様、これにもお金という問題がありまし
た．ある朝、いつもと違った道で、ミサから帰
ってきた男のたちが、どや顔で言ったのでした．
自分たちは町で一番安い洗濯屋を見つけた、そ
れは中国人男性で、1度の洗濯で6セントだと
言います．私たちはよごれた洗濯物を集めまし
た．その中国人がやってきて、にこにこしなが
ら、オッケー引き受けたと言ってくれたのでし
た．
