We discovered the New World by our-
selves. We learned the difference between
uptown and downtown. We found out
that museums and galleries could be visit-
ed free of charge. We discovered the
vast possibilities in a drug store, where
on a Sunday when everything else was
closed, you could buy anything from pen-
cils and stationery to hot-water bottles,
alarm clocks and jewellery of any kind
and description. We learned to sit at
the counter with poise and order in the
tone of an old-timer : “ Ham on rye,”
or “Two soft-boiled medium.”

私たちは自分たちだけで、このニューヨーク
という新世界を探索発見することになりました．
わかったことは博物館や美術館は入場無料．そ
れから薬局に行けば、たいていのことが叶うと
いうこと、そこは他の店が休業する日曜日でも
開店していて、何でも買えるのです．鉛筆だっ
て文房具から、湯たんぽに目覚まし時計、果て
は貴金属宝石に至るまで、ありとあらゆるもの
が売られているのです．飲食店ではカウンター
に落ち着き払って座れるようにもなりました．
そして常連客さながらに注文するのです：
「ハムをライ麦パン添えで」とか「半熟たまご
２つね．」などなど．

the New World： 訳せば「新世界」ですが、
これはニューヨークの街をこう呼ん
でいるのでしょう．
uptown：高台の住宅街のことですが、ニュー
ヨークは平地なので、繁華街から離れ
た閑静な高級住宅街を指します．おそ
らくマンハッタン辺りを散策していた
のだと思います．midtown(59丁目まで)
から北の地区になります．
hot-water bottle：湯たんぽ（瀬戸物製とかゴム製）
description：種類、たぐい
you could buy：買うことができるのでした．
日本語では「売られていました」の
ほうが普通の言い方なのでそう訳し
ておきました．
