We learned our first American songs：
“ My old Kentucky Home,” and “ Old
Black Joe,” in new settings by Father
Wasner, and we liked them very much.
On the last evening there was a great
party, and already I could understand a
good deal of what people were talking
about, thanks to our new friends：
Victoria Powell； Dr. Johnson； Mary Hugo,
a teacher from Duluth； and the nice
American consul who was going home to
Cincinnati from the South Seas. They say
that the first impression of a person is
the real one, and you will come back
to it time and again. This was our first
meeting with the American people, and
our impression was that they are kind,
generous and helpful.

私たちが最初に覚えたアメリカの歌は：
「マイ・オールド・ケンタッキー・ホーム」
と「オールド・ブラック・ジョー」で、ヴァ
スナー神父によるアレンジでした．もちろん
私たちはそれらの歌がといても気に入りまし
た．
船旅の最後の夜、大きなパーティーが催さ
れました．私は新しい友人たちのお陰で、す
でに乗船客の人々の話していることについて、
かなりの部分がわかるようになっていました．

の先生でメアリ・ユゴさん、それに南太平洋
からシンシナティーに帰国中のアメリカ領事
の素敵なお友だちです．みなさんがおっしゃ
るには、人は第一印象が、その人の真の姿と
のこと．その最初の印象だった姿に、何度も
戻ることになるのですって．これが私の最初
に出会ったアメリカ人のみなさんでした．そ
して私たちが受けた印象は、みなさん、親切
で寛大で、助けになる方々でした．
